Edo State was created on August 27 1991, by the administration of President lbrahim Badamasi Babangida.
The state, which was excised from the formal BENDEL state (Benin-Delta), that which was known as Bendel State split into two in a state creation exercise that led to the birth of Edo State and Delta State.
The Edo state was created to satisfy the people agitation for a new state.
Edo State of Nigeria is under the traditional leadership of the Oba of Benin, Omo N Oba Erediauwa.
The defunct Bendel State was part of the protectorate of Southern Nigeria between 1900 - 1954, and Western
Region between 1955 - 1963. Before the creation of states in 1991, the defunct Bendel State had been known by
two other names the Mid Western Region in 1963 and the MidWestern State in 1967.
Location:
Edo State shares boundaries with Delta on the South, Ondo on the West, Kogi on the North-East.
The main towns in the state are Benin, capital of the ancient Benin kingdom which is also the state capital, Ubiaja, Auchi, Ekpoma and Uromi.
Administrative Areas:
Edo State has 14 local government areas (LGAs) namely: Akoko-Edo, Etsako East, Esan South-East, Oredo, Orhiommwon, Ovia North East, Ovia South, Owan East, Owan West and Uhunmwode, until recently when
four new local goverment were created making eighteen LGAs in the state.
The new LGAs are Egor, lkpobaOkha, lgueben and Etsako Central.
The people:
The State is made up of the following ethnic groups: Edo, Esan, Etsako, Owan and Akoko Edo.
Education:
The State has such educational institutions as the University of Benin, Edo State University, Auchi Polytechnic among others. It is known for its educational attainments as it is the home of many distinguished scholars and is one of the highest producers of graduates in the country.
Administrative Structure:
In Edo State, federal, state and local governments, as well as indigenous agencies encouraged by government, exist to facilitate the business of governance.
The State Executive Council is headed by the Executive Governor. It comprises the Deputy Governor, the Secretary to the state government and Commissioners.
The Governor s Office departments includes Lands and Survey, Local Government, Planning and Budget, et cetera. The Legislature is made up of the Speaker,
Deputy Speaker, Majority Leader, Majority Whip, and the number of House functionaries.
Staff of the House office is led by the Clerk of the House. The judicial arm of the government comprises the Chief Judge of the State, the President of
the Customary Court of Appeal and the other judges who preside at the Magistrate Courts, High Courts and Customary Courts in the State.
Indigenous agencies encouraged by the government in the state include Cooperative Societies, Community Development Unions, Community Banks, etc.
The state government plays an advisory role with regard to project design and implementation and the payment of complementary sums of money for development projects
executed by these indigenous agencies.
