Edo Police Nab Suspected Kidnappers

BENIN CITY - A five-man gang of suspected kidnappers who recently abducted the Secretary to a Local Government Council in the state, has been arrested by men of Edo State Police Command, Benin City.


The suspects, Desmond Kimeku, 27, Sylvester Eliata, 28, Innocent Akharie, 26, Osagiede Dumbere, 29, and Odia Chukwueku, 27, sources disclosed, abducted the Local Council scribe, believing that he was the council executive chairman.


The NIGERIAN OBSERVER further gathered that on realising that, it was a case of mistaken identity the suspects immediately freed the secretary while his car was sold by them as compensation for their criminal efforts.


While commenting on their exploits, a member of the gang disclosed that the vehicle was sold at N400,000.00 as he received N80,000.00 while others got N60,000.00, N40,000.00 respectively, adding that they all belonged to Arubaga Confraternity, Edo Delta Zone.


Odia Chukwueku, however told The NIGERIAN OBSERVER that he took to kidnapping and armed robbery when his trip to India failed to yield desired result.


“When I saw how Nigerians are suffering, with 9 persons living in a single room without money to eat or return home, I quickly relocated home,” Odia narrated.


Also arrested was a member of two-man gang of car snatchers who operated in Warri, “Delta State, and one armed robbery suspect who sources alleged was among the five –man gang that attacked a residential apartment in Uselu Area last week in Benin City.


The suspected car snatcher, Obare Panyan, 24, who was nabbed with a stolen Jaguar car with registration Number DC 990 LSD revealed that he was introduced into car-snatching by his master, now at large.


The armed robbery suspect, Odianose John, a.k.a Skele, 26, denied any involvement in armed robbery, saying that the armed robber nabbed last week during a robbery operation in the residence was his neighbour.


Commenting on the arrest, the spokesman, Edo Police Command, Headquarters, Benin City, ASP Peter Ogboi stated that their exists a nexus between cultism and kidnapping as well as armed robbery.


He, however added that the suspects would be charged to court upon completion of police investigation.
