Benin beautification: CBN, UBA, PHCN buildings, others for demolition

Uchechukwu Olisah, Benin City - 03.07.2009

Offices of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc and Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) Plc are among other institutions on the Akpakpava road in Benin City, the Edo State capital, that may be demolished, if the state governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, carries out his threat to enforce the right of way as part of his administration’s efforts to expand the road.

Besides, the government said it was considering taking over the control of markets from local governments in the state, if the local governments failed to live up to their constitutional responsibility of maintaining the markets and ridding them of heaps of refuse.

Governor Oshiomhole gave the indication, on Thursday, during his visits to ascertain the conditions of some markets as well as failed portions of some major roads in Benin, which the governor had proposed for reconstruction and expansion.

The governor, who was accompanied on the visits by some of his aides, said the front side of the perimeter fence of the CBN and some other banks, as well as private-owned buildings that had violated the right of way, must be pulled down.
