Establish Army Command Sec school in Edo - Commissioner


BENIN CITY - Edo State Commissioner for Education, Dr. (Mrs.) Ngozi Osarenren, has appealed to the Nigerian Army authorities to, as a matter of urgency,. establish a Command Secondary School in the state to complement the state government efforts at developing the education sector.


The Commissioner made the call in Benin, when she played host to the Commander, 4th Mechanized Brigade, Benin, Brigadier-General Ugwu Chima in her office. Dr. Osarenren disclosed that the state government has awarded contracts up to the tune of N1.5b for the purchase of land and supply of furniture to public schools, as well as the reconstruction/renovation of dilapidated school structures across the state. She expressed optimism that infrastructural development in public schools would receive aggressive boost as soon as the 2010 budget is passed by the State House of Assembly.


Earlier in his address, the Commander, 4th Mechanized Brigade, Benin, Brigadier-General Ugwu Chima, told the Commissioner that he was in her office to solicit the assistance of the state government in up-grading facilities in Army Command Primary Schools across the state. Brigadier-General Ugwu Chima decried the level of infrasatructural decay in Army Schools and appealed that something urgent should be done to address the situation.


Highlights of the visit was the exchange of souvenir between the Commissioner and the Brigade Commander.


In another development, Edo State Commissioner for Education Dr. (Mrs.) Ngozi Osarenren, yesterday, paid a visit to Edo College, Benin City, to assess the extent of damage done to one of the buildings by an early morning inferno. Addressing newsmen, Dr. Osarenren remarked that even though the incident was painful and traumatic, she however, expressed thanks to God that no life was lost in the inferno.


She commended the students who rose to the occasion by mobilizing to put out the fire, before it could spread to other building in the school premises.


Conducing the Commissioner round the burst building the School Principal, Mr. S.O. Cole asserted that the building went up in flames as soon as PHCN restored light to the school premises, which was in black out before the incident.
